Do I need to perform a field test before installing my wireless link?
It is logical that the next step after simulation is to perform tests with a real radio module. You may be concerned about things such as:
- Other devices using the frequency band such as remote keyfobs.
- Buildings and foliage that may reflect, block or absorb your signal.
- Snow or rain in the area that may absorb radio waves.
- Trying to receive signal indoors through walls.
And other things that cannot be predicted by simulation.
To perform field testing, you need to be aware of things like..
- The hardware (such as a CPU) for data generation/reception and controlling the radio module.
- Knowing what measurements to take and how to interpret them.
- Saving the data and presenting them in a report.
- Extended measurements that conventional radios cannot perform beyond RSSI output.
Constructing a test rig requires some RF or coding experience.
Packet testing allows you to see the reliability of your communication link.

The answer is yes!
- Simulation alone won't give a definitive answer.
- What you need is to account for communication inconsistency due to unfavourable or unforeseen conditions.
- Therefore judging the correct reception margin is necessary to create a reliable communication link.
Simulation will provide some insight about the feasibility, but decision must be made based on field test results.
